What started with questions about a $28 million endorsement agreement involving Kawhi Leonard and Aspiration grew into a massive NBA investigation of the Los Angeles Clippers.
Investigators conducted 73 interviews with 60 people and reviewed more than 200,000 pages of documents, examining relationships between the Clippers, Kawhi Leonard, his former business manager Dennis Robertson, and companies doing business with the organization.
The NBA ultimately concluded that the Clippers violated league rules against salary-cap circumvention, resulting in enormous penalties—including a $30 million fine, five forfeited first-round draft picks, a one-year suspension for owner Steve Ballmer, additional executive suspensions, a $700,000 payment from Leonard, and a five-year ban for Robertson.
The Clippers strongly dispute the NBA's findings.
So how did endorsement deals become a salary-cap scandal—and where did it all begin?
