The Clippers Massive Punishment
What started as questions about one unusual endorsement deal turned into a massive investigation of the Los Angeles Clippers, Kawhi Leonard, Steve Ballmer, and people inside the organization.
In this episode of 3Minute News, we break down the Clippers scandal in simple terms: how outside endorsement deals were used to provide Kawhi Leonard with additional income, why the NBA determined the Clippers crossed the line, and how companies doing business with the organization became part of the investigation.
Investigators conducted 73 interviews with 60 people and reviewed more than 200,000 pages of documents before concluding that the situation went beyond the highly publicized Aspiration deal.
The consequences were enormous: a $30 million fine, five first-round draft picks forfeited, a one-year suspension for Steve Ballmer, additional executive suspensions, a $700,000 payment from Kawhi Leonard, and a five-year ban for Dennis Robertson.
The Clippers dispute the NBA's findings, but the league says the organization violated its salary-cap circumvention rules.
